This might be my last blog entry of 2013. I’m not sure if I’ll devote time on New Year’s Eve to saying something that might not be interesting. Anyway…
Usually, the highlight of my Saturday night is watching Match of the Day. But two days ago, I randomly ran into Ben (not my flammate Ben, but the one with the Hyde Park Harriers) at the Edge (the gym at the University of Leeds) and he asked if I was interested in attending a Steve Phillips gig at the Brudenell Social Club – Steve Phillips being an English blues musician. I figured why not – although I often enjoy doing nothing on a Saturday night and watching Match of the Day, this surely would be much more fun.
So I met up with Ben and twins named Amy and Kate that he once met years ago on a train ride after concert in Manchester (I think). And a Jeff Lebowski-like dude named Patrick, who was living in California (but originally from Chicago) but travelling through the U.K. He didn’t seem to have any sort of fixed plans during his travels, which is actually quite cool. He loves the blues, but mentioned his biggest passion is raising his sons and he actually said Amy and Kate would fall in love with them. Or something to that extent.
As for the music, I enjoyed the show a lot. I can’t say I knew Steve Phillips’ music at all before the show. I still don’t. But I liked his sound. Steve Phillips is very much influenced by the legends of Blues like Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson, so those who like old time blues would very much like Steve Phillips (He also considers Bob Dylan one of his influences). I would very much attend another gig of his.
Otherwise, the most exciting thing that has happened recently (well, other than watching Chelsea defeat Liverpool yesterday) was that I joined a gym – Albeit for 12 days. The Edge – the gym on the campus of Leeds Uni and normal Tuesday and Thursday night meeting point for the Hyde Park Harriers – is offering 12 days there for £12 in December. I generally find gyms incredibly inexpensive but the Edge’s offer is great. Anyway, I’ve worked out there three of the last four days and I’ve had a lot of fun. I’ve obviously spent a lot of time on the treadmill but I’ve also spent quite a bit of time swimming. Whenever I’m in the vicinity, I always see people swimming. I figured… why not swim? So I did, and I realized that it’s harder than running. For a split second, I was a bit concerned about drowning – of course, the lifeguards wouldn’t let that happen. I was further reminded that the breaststroke is the easiest stroke and that I really should take swimming lessons. Anyway, it’s a very good workout.
Anyway, before the Steve Phillips gig, I had my normal ParkRun in the morning. Not surprisingly, I ran a lot better timewise than I did in the ParkRun on Christmas – 17:45. Surprisingly, I finished fourth and I didn’t run well. There is a ParkRun on New Year’s Day, so I hope to run better. Afterwards, we went to different cafe – Opposite was closed – so a bunch of us went to cafe near a pub named the Hyde Park (which is sort of like a landmark in Leeds) which was a nice change of pace. Mainly because I think the hot chocolate was slightly better at the new place (I still wish I remember which cafe we were in).
Well, if I don’t blog again in the next day or so, I’d like to wish you a Happy New Year!
